Church History
Seven families formed Chinese Faith Baptist Church on February 25, 1989 and held its first worship service on Sunday, June 11, 1989 at the former home of Larry and Elaine Chin in North Portland, Oregon. Dr. Edward W. Goodrick, Greek professor from Multnomah Bible College, spoke on “What is the Church?” A total of 33 adults and 19 children were in attendance. Refreshments were served and that has become a tradition to this present time.
On July 2, 1989, the church moved to the lower level of Evangel Baptist Church at NE 28th and Flanders Street, Portland, Oregon. The church met at this location until April 2008 when Evangel Baptist Church transferred the building to Imago Dei to use for offices. CFBC then relocated to Western Seminary, 5511 NE Hawthorne Blvd., Portland, Oregon. A search for a permanent location became more imperative.
The Facilities Exploration Committee became aware that the Riverwest Church in Lake Oswego was available. Through God’s gracious provision, and the generous donations/personal loans of the church family, Chinese Faith Baptist Church was able to purchase the building without applying for a commercial loan. The first service was held on March 8, 2009, and the church was dedicated on Easter Sunday, April 12, 2009.
Chinese Faith Baptist Church was incorporated on October 8, 1989 with 19 charter members, a Constitution, and elected officers. On March 6, 1990, the church became affiliated with the Northwest Conservative Baptist Association and CB Northwest.
Dr. Carl Laney, professor at Western Seminary, Portland, Oregon, acted as our interim pastor from 1991 – 1993.
Dr. William W. Ki was installed as our first full-time pastor August 29, 1993 - June 30, 2009 (16 years). He resigned to answer God’s call to another ministry.
Brian Gomes served as the Associate Pastor from July 13, 2003 to February 27, 2007. This position has not replaced at this time.
